Haaretz newspaper reported that the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas told George Mitchell, the American envoy to the Middle East, that in the event the Israeli government continues its settlement activities in the West Bank, he (Abbas) will resign the office of President of the Palestinian Authority:
This resignation, if it takes place, would mean the practical dismantling of the Palestinian Authority. Thereafter, the world will witness how the state of Israel will directly assume its responsibilities as the occupying power of the Palestinian Territories under its control and occupation. Mr. Abbas would be giving a clear signal that the Palestinian struggle will take a new direction. That would be the first step in many steps that Mr. Abbas must take. Nevertheless, he seems to be on the right track.
Hope is the stuff from which life is made!
