Sana Hassainia, MP – Principle Over Expediency

Canadian Member of Parliament (MP) for the Montreal, Quebec riding of Verchères Les Partiotes decided to quit her New Democratic Party (NDP) caucus in Parliament to sit as independent for the remainder of this term in office.  Hundreds of Palestinian children were (and still are) being slaughtered by the Israeli war machine in Gaza.  The NDP, under the leadership of Tom Mulcair, took a pro-Israel stand parroting the Zionist-propagated line: “Israel has the right to defend itself.”  Ms. Hassainia said: “I said to myself, my God, we’re a socialist democratic party, and we’re saying that Israel has the right to defend themselves against a people that are completely powerless.”  It was a moment where principles collided with political reality.  Ms. Hassainia had a decision to make; either toe the line and repeat the leader-imposed party position in which she did not believe, or take a principled position and say the truth that she truly believed.  “When there’s such a huge difference of opinion between MPs and their leader, are they supposed to support that position or are they going to evolve with the situation?”  Ms. Hassainia asked herself.  She evolved with the situation.  In order to confirm to Sana Hassainia that she was not alone, I sent her the following message:

The honourable Ms. Sana Hassainia, MP
Parliament of Canada, Ottawa

I am writing this message to thank you for taking a courageous and principled position in support of peace and justice for all.  Your support for Palestinian men, women, and children in Gaza is heartfelt by all justice-loving Canadians.  Your stand has been communicated to many families in Gaza who are still being terrorized by Israeli bombardment, fighter jets attacks, drone-launched rockets, and multitude of war-launching capabilities by the Israeli military.  Civilians in Gaza have been minimized to a sub-human characterization by the Israeli leadership and are suffering from an Illegal Israeli blockade under which the state of Israel strictly limits the caloric intake by Palestinians as it restricts the allowable entry of food, supplements, medicine, just to name a few of life necessities into Gaza.  The state of Israel commits these crimes in the twenty-first century in view of the entire world, and many countries, including Canada – under the influence of the Israel lobby – say and do nothing to stop those crimes against innocent men, women, and children.

In the midst of that darkness, and while other Canadian politicians – from all parties, including the NDP unfortunately – are busy reviewing polls, calculating potential donations, and measuring media coverage, you stand tall.  You are looking down on those midgets as you set a bright example that will be noted in history.  At this time in Canadian politics, expediency for short-term domestic political gains seems to have overcome the value of decency.  The upholding of principles has been set aside in favour of what would bring in a little more money or a little more favourable media coverage.  By being true to the Canadian values of decency, fairness, and justice for all; you assert that Canada will not be hijacked by Lobby groups and bias media.

I am just one Canadian; and I am not even a resident of your riding.  However, I wish to assure you that you have chosen the right path by standing for the principles of fairness, justice, and peace for all; not just for the rich or the powerful.  History will record this moment for Canada with pride, and future generations of Canadians will read about you and will hold you in their hearts with love and adoration.

Thank you; I am proud of you!
